Hi all and welcome to the second edition of the Weekly 99+Boss Card Review.
Today we will be looking at Crystal Ball, Ghost Quarter and Karn, Silver Golem.
First up is Crystal Ball. A 3 cost Artifact that allows you to pay 1 mana and tap to Scry 2.
Why not just use Sensei’s Divining Top? I know you’re thinking it.
This card actually has one advantage over top and that is the Scry mechanic. If you
don’t like the cards on top, you may put any or all of them on the bottom of your library, top cannot do this, and when used in conjunction with top, Crystal Ball gets even better as it allows you to dig an extra card, get rid of the chaff, and set up the next 2 draws.
In Short, if you cannot afford a Sensei’s Divining top, then Crystal Ball is the card to get, if you do have a top, using the Crystal Ball alongside it is pretty cool too.

Next is Ghost Quarter, a land that can destroy target land and its controller’s gets to search for a basic land and put it into play.
Can’t afford the big dollars for wasteland? Then this is what you want to play, along with some others with similar effect like dust bowl and tectonic edge. This card also has another sneaky application hour opponent may not see coming. Oh no, I need a blue source to play my counter spell, I will target my own darksteel citadel with ghost quarter. Darksteel Citadel is indestructible so the first ability of Ghost Quarter resolves with no effect, but the second (search) ability still triggers and you may go get your island to play your Counterspell.
Nice……. So in the right circumstances Ghost Quarter also doubles as a fetch land. Play this with Crucible of Worlds and you can do that every turn.
Last on our list is Karn, Silver Golem, a 5 cost Artifact Creature with two abilities, the first being if he blocks, or is blocked he get – 4/+4 making him very tough to deal with. His second ability and my favourite, you may pay 1 colourless mana and make a target non creature artifact into an artifact creature with power and toughness equal to its mana cost. While this is good for animating your own artifacts, it really shines when used on your opponents.
Any 0 cost artifact will die when animated by Karn, including Artifact Lands. Want to doom blade their birthing pod? Karn lets you do this. Essentially making most creature destruction into artifact destruction as well. A great addition to any deck and not used enough in my opinion.
I hope you enjoyed this week’s insight into some more card alternatives…
Til next time…
